Meaghan Gernes is a recent graduate of Loyola University Chicago, receiving her Masters in Social Work (MSW). After completing her first year internship with Back 2 School in 2021 and staying connected after that as a regular volunteer, Meaghan is thrilled to officially rejoin the Back 2 School team as the Events Coordinator. With a passion for working with kids, she wants to help bring to life the school supplies distributions and other education-related events that so greatly benefit low-income children and families throughout Illinois and the greater United States.
Before completing her MSW program at Loyola University, Meaghan attended Saint Louis University and received her bachelor’s degree in psychology, Spanish, and social work. Following graduation, she spent a year as a Jesuit Volunteer/AmeriCorps member with Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest, living in community with other volunteers outside of Portland, OR and serving at a local shelter for families experiencing homelessness. Her role at the shelter was to run all children’s programming, including a daily after school program for kids ages 5-18. Spending a year in that role really pushed Meaghan to pursue a career in social work, specifically with children. Meaghan is originally from St. Paul, MN and has loved living in Chicago these past 2 years.
